Pallet rack uprights carry every pound stored above them, and they sit right where forklifts turn, reverse and line up for picks. That is why rack damage almost always starts at the bottom of a post.
Two products handle most of that risk: column protectors and end of rack protectors. This guide explains what each does, how they compare and where to install them. Guardrail Online is based in Dallas, TX and supplies rack protectors, guardrails and pallet racking components to warehouses across the US.
Quick answer: Use column protectors on individual rack uprights along an aisle, and end of rack protectors on rack ends where forklifts turn into the aisle. Our bolt-on column protector covers the lower 24″ of a 3″ wide upright. Our floor-anchored end of rack protector is 48″ long with a 12″ high corner and fits posts up to 6″ wide. Facilities with busy cross aisles usually need both.

Key takeaways
- Column protectors guard one upright each; end of rack protectors guard the whole end of a rack run.
- Rack ends facing cross aisles take the most turning impacts and are the first place to protect.
- Our column protector bolts to the column; our end of rack protector anchors to the concrete floor.
- Both come in high-visibility safety yellow (RAL 1033), which also helps drivers see the rack.

Why Rack Uprights Need Protection
An upright frame is a load-bearing column. A forklift strike near the base can bend or dent it, and a damaged upright can no longer be relied on to carry its rated load. Because the damage is often small and low to the floor, it is easy to miss until it gets worse.
Rack protection does two jobs. It takes the impact before the upright does, and its bright color makes the post easier for drivers to see and avoid.
What a Column Protector Does
A rack column protector wraps the front of a single upright. Ours is a bolt-on guard, 24″ high, for 3″ wide rack posts, and it attaches to the rack column with the 2 bolts included. Because it mounts to the upright itself, no floor drilling is needed.
What an End of Rack Protector Does
An end of rack protector sits on the floor in front of a rack end and covers both its front and side. Ours is 48″ long, 5″ wide and 3″ high, rising to a 12″ high corner, and weighs 64 lbs. It anchors to the concrete with four M12 x 4-3/4″ wedge anchors, fits posts up to 6″ wide and comes in left-hand and right-hand versions to suit each side of the aisle.
Column Protector vs End of Rack Protector: Side by Side
| Feature | Column protector | End of rack protector |
|---|---|---|
| Protects | One rack upright | Front and side of a rack end |
| Mounting | Bolts to the rack column (2 bolts included) | Anchored to concrete (4 M12 x 4-3/4″ wedge anchors included) |
| Size | 24″ high | 48″ long, 12″ high corner |
| Fits | 3″ wide rack posts | Posts up to 6″ wide; 42″ and 48″ rack depths |
| Versions | One style | Left-hand or right-hand |
| Finish | Safety yellow, RAL 1033 | Safety yellow, RAL 1033 |
| Best for | Exposed uprights along an aisle | Rack ends facing cross aisles |
For 42″ deep racks, the end of rack protector assumes 6″ of clearance from the wall, or 12″ between racks placed back to back.
Where to Install Each in Your Warehouse
- Rack ends on cross aisles. Forklifts turn here, often with a load blocking the view. Start with end of rack protectors.
- Uprights next to dock doors and staging lanes. High traffic and frequent reversing make these posts likely targets; add column protectors.
- Posts that already show damage. Once a damaged upright has been inspected and replaced, protect that spot so it isn’t hit again.
- Narrow aisles. Less room to maneuver means more contact with uprights along the length of the aisle.
When to Use Guardrail Instead
Rack protectors stop low-level impacts at the rack itself. When you need to keep forklifts away from a whole area, such as a walkway beside the racking, an office wall or the end of a long rack run, a guardrail is the better tool. Double height guardrail suits pedestrian zones next to forklift lanes, and single height guardrail protects walls and equipment at bumper height.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between a column protector and an end of rack protector?
A column protector bolts onto a single 3" wide rack upright and shields its lower 24". An end of rack protector is a 48" long, floor-anchored guard that covers the front and side of a rack end, with a 12" high corner, and fits posts up to 6" wide.
Do I need both column protectors and end of rack protectors?
Many facilities use both: end of rack protectors on rack ends that face cross aisles, where forklifts turn, and column protectors on exposed uprights along the aisle. Start with the rack ends that see the most turning traffic.
How are rack protectors installed?
Our column protector bolts to the rack column with the 2 bolts included. Our end of rack protector anchors to the concrete floor with the 4 M12 x 4-3/4" wedge anchors included in its hardware kit.
Will an end of rack protector fit 42 inch deep racking?
Yes. It works with both 48" and 42" rack depths. For 42" racks, it assumes 6" of clearance from the wall, or 12" between racks positioned back to back.
What should I do after a forklift hits a rack upright?
Unload the affected bay, have the damaged upright inspected by a qualified person, and replace any bent or damaged components before reloading. Then add protection at that spot so the same impact does not happen again.
